Travel tips on a budget

Travelling anywhere in the world can be a pricey proposition for most Aussie travellers. The airfare alone could bust your budget, not to mention that the length of the flight will most definitely force you to stretch your visit well over a week. With the cost of leisure travel rising every year, it’s important to carefully plan your trip to avoid unnecessary expenses, and take advantage of every single opportunity to save money.

What if we told you that you can easily cut expenses when you travel abroad? We’ve put together this handy money-saving guide to help you stick to your budget while enjoying your trip without a care in the world.

Avoid Breakfast from the Hotels

If your stay at the hotel doesn’t include free breakfast, then you’ll want to stay away from ordering anything from the hotel’s restaurant. Prices are usually much more expensive than if you ordered the same meal from a local restaurant, not to mention that there isn’t much variety in their menu.

Figure out where you will be eating before actually going out. Use sites like Trip Advisor to compare prices and get the best deal – not only for your wallet, but for your stomach as well. Or, you can consider staying at a hotel chain, such as Homewood Suites, which usually offer free breakfast. Visit to get a complete list of hotel freebies, including free meals, parking and Wi-Fi.

One more thing: cut your coffee. Nobody denies the great taste of a cup of Joe, but if it costs you $5 or even more, then your travel budget will be drained quicker than you expected.

Get City Attraction Cards

Planning to visit museums or other local attractions with your family and kids? Save your money by getting a city attraction card, which provides great discounts and free transportation as well. You can save up to 55 per cent if you use a city attraction card. Smart Destinations offers Go City Cards that let you visit dozens of attractions for just one low price – e.g. a one-time payment of $99 will give you two free days of visiting over 30 attractions in Miami. That’s an exceptional deal given that you would probably pay about $79 for just one single pass for visiting just one of the attractions.

Use Coupon Codes for Car Rentals

Planning to rent a car? If yes, then one of the best ways to save money is looking for coupon codes or member discounts. Many car rental companies offer coupon codes that you can use to get a discount or other perks. Search the Internet, or ask around to see if anybody has managed to find a valid coupon code. Calling the company to ask about coupon codes will also help.

Also, avoid reducing your car rental excess directly from the rental company, because you will end up paying a lot more.  You can buy travel insurance that include Rental Vehicle Exess or buy a policy from a standalone company such as

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance

Never embark on a trip abroad without adequate travel insurance cover for you and your family. Travel insurance covers flight cancellations, rental vehicle excess, medical expenses if necessary, lost deposits, trip delays, and much more. If you choose the right level of cover, you and yours will be fully protected in case anything goes wrong during your trip.
